CD Tsunami team explores putting sirens in homes

"Tsunami alarms may be installed in people's homes and extra outdoor sirens added to boost the Western Bay's disaster warning network.

Emergency management officials want to investigate the new siren system after the current operation came under heavy fire for not being loud enough.

Developed by Aucklander Wilfried Roding, the Meerkat Alert needs 24-hour access to power. Under the plan, civil defence officials would have to get Powerco to set off the alarms.

Small sirens could be set up inside residential homes and outdoor sirens fixed to suitable structures to sound the alarm."
