Severed cable disrupts South Island businesses

CD Severed cable disrupts South Island businesses

"A $16 million investment in upgrading Telecom cables in the south should lessen the chances of a repeat of yesterday's cut to services which saw 12,000 southern customers caught in a communications breakdown.

Southland and Otago customers found themselves with limited phone, internet and data transfer services for more than four hours after a fibre-optic cable was cut north of Dunedin about 10.35am.

Telecom spokeswoman Sarah Berry said a digger working at a culvert had cut a cable between the East Otago towns of Palmerston and Waikouaiti.

Services came progressively back online from about 2.35pm with full service restored by 3.20pm."
