Power cut hits half of South Island

CD Power cut hits half of South Island

"Contractors accidentally cut power to 130,000 homes and businesses in the South Island yesterday.

Nelson, Marlborough, Motueka, Golden Bay, North Canterbury and Buller were without electricity for about two hours from 4.40pm as the result of a mistake at the Islington sub-station in Christchurch.

The power cut left businesses unable to ring up sales and affected phone lines.

Yesterday's problem follows a string of major cuts around the country this year, including one in Auckland in June that left 700,000 people without power and cost businesses millions of dollars.

Transpower spokesman Chris Roberts said a mistake was to blame for the latest incident."
