2 climbers overdue in Fiordland

Low cloud has delayed an air search for two missing climbers in Fiordland, Lisa Simone Auer - an Australian woman based in Wanaka, and her male companion, thought to be from the UK.

It is thought that these experienced mountaineers were expected to return from climbing Mount Tutoko near Te Anau on Tuesday.

An Invercargill based Alpine Cliff rescue team is preparing to begin searching when the weather clears.

Few ready for flu pandemic

Plans continue to develop for the possible pandemic. These plans are now to include "community assessment centres" to keep the infected away from GPs and Hospitals. While planning and preparation is a good thing, there is still the possibility that this may amount to nothing.

New Beacons

As per previous posts, there is a campaign to encourage all distress beacon users to upgrade to the 406MHz system.

I recently purchased a portable 406MHz beacon with GPS for demonstration to Land SAR groups, Scout Groups and the like, and to use for Scouting and personal trips.

The newer 406MHz beacons are now down to a similar size and weight as the smaller 121.5MHz beacons, but unfortunately they have not yet come down to the same price, this is in part due to the higher specifications required for the 406MHz system, but also due to the small demand so far. Prices are likely to come down as demand grows, and this is seen with a special promotion on the Kannad 406XS-2 with GPS from Safety at Sea, down from more than $2200 to $1595.

Private search planned for missing fisherman

Another search that is to be suspended by RCCNZ is looking like it will be extended as a private search. The search for the Mi Jay has been going on for some time now, was suspended briefly then started again based on new information about the possible intentions of the boat.

The official search which started on the 5th Decmber is expected to be suspended today after a shoreline search is made around the Chatham Islands.
